Where are you from?

"We are from the Adelaide Hills, South Australia."

Who has influenced your passion for equestrian the most, and why?

"Katherine - Honestly, the horses themselves. Every horse teaches you something different, and the difficult ones often become your greatest teachers. They’ve taught me patience, consistency and the importance of always putting the horse first. I’ve also been fortunate to learn from some incredible horsemen and women throughout my journey, but it’s the horses I work with every day that continue to shape the trainer and rider I strive to be.

Bingham - I grew up studying some of Australia’s greatest polo players and strategists, including Ginger Hunt, Glen Gilmore and Mike Todd. As a young player, I was fascinated by competition and loved watching the very best perform under pressure. As my career has evolved, my focus has shifted more towards the horse. Horsemen such as Monty Roberts have challenged the way I think, and today I’m always looking to learn from skilled people across different disciplines. I’m happy to question my own methods if it helps me become a more subtle, effective horseman."

What has been your biggest riding-related accomplishment?

"Katherine - My biggest riding accomplishment has been producing horses that leave our program more confident, educated and prepared for successful futures with their owners. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching a horse you’ve invested months into go on to thrive, whether that’s in eventing, dressage, showjumping, polo or simply becoming someone’s safe and enjoyable partner. As our own young team begins stepping into the competition world, I’m excited for the next chapter and the opportunity to showcase the horses we’ve been developing.

Bingham - Competing professionally in multiple countries, touring England as part of a young Australian team, playing Test Matches against South Africa, New Zealand, England and other international sides, and winning tournaments such as Ellerston, AUS Open, Gold Cup etc. are memories I’ll always be grateful for. Equally rewarding has been the past two years building alongside Apex Equine. Together we’ve quietly developed our own exciting young team of off-the-track polo ponies and performance Warmbloods, while also starting, retraining and producing a consistent stream of happy, healthy and willing horses for our clients. Watching both our own horses and our clients’ horses continue to progress is something I’m incredibly proud of."

How do you prepare yourself for competitions?

"Katherine - Competition preparation is a big part of our life, even if I’m not always the one walking into the arena/field. Throughout the year I’m heavily involved in preparing and managing our team of polo ponies as they travel to tournaments across Australia, so making sure every horse is physically fit, mentally confident and feeling their best has become second nature. Personally, I’ve taken a step back from competing over the last few years while focusing on growing Apex Equine and juggling family life. Now that our young performance team is ready to start stepping out, I’m really excited to get back out there and showcase the horses we’ve been quietly developing.

Bingham - For me, competition is really about creating the best opportunity to find that flow state. I prepare myself and the horses with a very similar mindset. The goal is to arrive calm, healthy and ready to perform. For me, breathing is the foundation. If I can regulate my breathing and settle my nervous system, everything else tends to fall into place. Alongside that I focus on eating well, regular cold exposure, physical therapy and light movement to put myself in the best position to perform. The horses are no different. They need consistent training, quality nutrition, good recovery and the confidence that comes from solid preparation. Alfalfa Plus has become a staple in our feeding program because it helps us keep horses in consistent condition and ready for work. When both the horse and rider arrive relaxed, confident and present, that’s usually when the best performances happen."

What is your dream riding goal?

"Katherine - My long-term goal is to produce horses from the very beginning of their ridden careers and see them through to the top levels, while continuing to build Apex Equine as a respected performance horse training business. My young four-year-old Warmblood, Spruce, is very special to me and I hope we can be successful across a couple of disciplines throughout his career and show what good horse management, training and a brilliant team around you can achieve. If I can help more horses reach their potential, inspire owners along the way and continue learning from these incredible animals and other horse people every day, I’ll consider that a successful career.

Bingham - To continue building BomBirra into a respected performance horse program, producing exceptional horses across multiple disciplines while competing on horses we’ve sourced and developed ourselves. If we can continue producing great horses, helping owners achieve their goals and contribute positively to Australian polo, I’ll be very happy."

What is your favourite Johnson's Natural Formula feed, and why?

"Our favourite feed is Alfalfa Plus. We can feed it to a wide range of horses without any concern, it's high in fibre, high in protein, and super palatable. But to be honest, we would feel comfortable and proud to feed any of JNF's feed, because it's what goes on at Johnson's HQ that I love - the fact that every bag of feed and bale of hay is so thoroughly tested, traceable and consistent is what gives me the peace of mind to feed it to not only our own horses but also the horses of our clients who have trusted us with the animals they love so much. "
